What is internship?
An internship is a period of work experience offered by an organization for a limited period of time. An internship can be paid, unpaid, or partially paid (in the form of a stipend). TYPES OF INTERNSHIPS OFFERED:-
- Insights: Many large corporations, particularly investment banks, have “insights” programs that serve as a pre-internship event numbering from a single day to a week, either in person or virtually.
- Paid internships are common in professional fields including medicine, architecture, science, engineering, law, business (especially accounting and finance), technology, and advertising. Work experience internships usually occur during the second or third year of schooling. This type of internship is to expand an intern’s knowledge both in their school studies and also at the company. The intern is expected to bring ideas and knowledge from school into the company.
- Work research, virtual research (graduation) or dissertation: This is mostly done by students who are in their final year of school. With this kind of internship, a student does research for a particular company. The company can have something that they feel they need to improve, or the student can choose a topic in the company themselves. The results of the research study will be put in a report and often will have to be presented.
- Partially-paid internships are when students are paid in the form of a stipend. Stipends are typically a fixed amount of money that is paid out on a regular basis. Usually, interns that are paid with stipends are paid on a set schedule associated with the organization.
- Virtual Internship is internships that are done remotely on email, phone, and web communication. This offers flexibility as physical presence isn’t required. It still provides the capacity to gain job experience without the conventional requirement of being physically present in an office. Virtual interns generally have the opportunity to work at their own pace.
Information for +2 passed students:-
At first, there are co-ops programs. You can get all the information regarding this on the college website where your course related stuff is. First, we have to check whether this option is available or not.
If the co-ops programs are available, then college will help you find jobs / internships and provided that co-ops are not available, then you have to apply for it on your own.
In case of Bachelor’s, there are 3 internships but for Master’s there is only single one.
HOW TO APPLY FOR INTERNSHIP?
At first, you have to wait for 2 terms to gain some experience in the work field or in the study area. The most important thing to do in this time period is to strengthen your academic record, build good GPA and certain projects which can be related to your study or not. Another thing which helps us to fetch good internship is impeccable resume. Also, the search criterion is different is every case and vary from province to province and institution to institution.
And the chances to get these internships are very slim because there is great piece of competition. For instance, if an applicant applies in 30 distinct companies, only 5 will call you for an interview and hardly these companies will offer you a job. This is the current scenario going on.
