An overview

The IELTS Listening test lasted for 40 minutes out of which 30 minutes are meant for listening to the recording while the remaining 10 minutes are allotted for transferring answers. And you will be amazed to know that pattern of this exam is always the same which means recording which is played follows the same pattern which involves:-

  • A conversation between two people.
  • A speech or talk by a single person.
  • A group conversation
  • A talk by one person mostly on an academic topic.

Right methodology to solve listening test

  1. The adoption of the correct method is necessary to mark most of your answers or to be more precise to mark all of your answers right. For Paper-based listening tests, as you hear recording simultaneously write your answers on the question paper because humans have less reliable memory. Extra ten minutes will be granted to students to transfer the answers from the question paper to the answer sheet whereas, only two minutes will be given to students to transfer their answers.
  2. Always pay close attention to the demand for questions. Read properly and never go off the word limit. For many years it has been the most consistent reason behind the children scoring fewer marks in the IELTS Listening test.
  3. Go through all the questions of a particular set before the recording starts as it gives a better idea about the topic which will be played in the recording plus it also helps the students to locate answers conveniently.
  4. Avoid spelling mistakes. Recheck your spellings twice. This can be achieved by attempting multiple practice tests

Pro tips

  • Always use a pencil as it is erasable and one changes the choice of answer.
  • Always use a single case and do not switch between capital letters and small or cursive letters. I personally advise the students to attempt their reading as well as a listening module in capital letters because if one chooses small letters then one has to remember that a few words must be written in capitals like the name of a place or person.
  • Practice with different accents it will help the students to become familiar with numerous accents which can be a matter of trouble to many of them.
  • When it comes to filling in the blanks make sure the complete sentence should be grammatically correct.
  • In case of multiple-choice questions, instructions say to write the correct letter but if the student writes the complete word given in the option it will be considered wrong. You just have to write down the correct letter from the options provided.
  • You do not need to hear everything.
  • Keep an eye on the next question.
  • In map completion, locate the path using pencil and never lose track of the ongoing conversation.
  • There may be a gap between answers so try to focus on the keywords.
  • Lastly, Watch Netflix, Hollywood songs, and English news to experience different ways of pronunciation.
