J-1 VISA
What is J-1 Visa?
A J-1 visa is a non-immigrant visa issued by the United States Visa Office to research scholars, professors and exchange visitors participating in courses that advance cultural exchange, especially to obtain medical or business training within the U.S. The J-1 visa program allows individuals to both study and work, at the same time. All applicants must meet eligibility criteria, English language requirements, and be sponsored either by a university, private sector or government program.
Types of J-1 VISA offered by United States of America:-
- Short-Term Scholar – Research Scholars teach along with conducting research at US universities for up to six months.
- Au Pair – Individuals between the ages of 18 – 26 years can come to the US to study and can live along with a sponsor family for up to two years. They can study at a US university, along with providing childcare to the sponsor family.
- Internship – Recent graduates can come to the US to learn about the American culture and get hands-on experience in their chosen profession.
- Work and Travel – Full-time students enrolled at a post-secondary school can come to the US to work and travel during the winter, spring and summer season-breaks.
- Camp Counselor – Individuals who are 18 years or older can come to the US and work with local youth at the US summer camps as a camp teacher.
- International Visitor Program – the US Department of State selects international visitors to consult, research, observe, and train with the US colleges
Step by step procedure on how to apply for a J-1 visa in India:
1. Find a sponsor: Find a designated sponsor to accept you into their program. Your sponsor can even help you with how to apply for a J-1 visa.
2. Finish the DS-2019 form: This form is an official document issued by the US State Department which allows you to have an interview with the US embassy or consulate. If your spouse or child/children are going to accompany you, they will also be given a separate DS-2019 form. Your designated sponsor will issue this form which will have all the required information of the exchange program, including the start and end date, as well as the program cost.
3. J1 visa cost: You will need to pay a SEVIS 1-901 fee to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as part of your J-1 visa application. There is a chance that your sponsor might pay for you if the fee is included with the program fee. If that is the case, you will get a receipt confirming the payment. The Nonimmigrant Visa Application Processing Fee is another fee that you will be expected to pay, which is $160.
4. Interview with a US Embassy or Consulate: The final approval for your J-1 visa application is given by a US Embassy or a Consulate. During the interview, you will be asked about your program and how you will support yourself. It is crucial to state that you intend on returning to your home country once your program ends.
J1 VISA REQUIREMENTS TO BE FULFILLED AS PER EMBASSY:
