Talking about the University’s past, the initial institution to Southern Cross University was the Lismore Teacher’s College which started operation on 23 February 1970. On September 1, 1971, the Lismore Teacher’s College became a College of Advanced Education under the Higher Education Act, 1969. The institution was soon renamed to Northern Rivers College of Advanced Education in 1973. It was after 20 years that Southern Cross University was established in 1994.

Recently, in the year 2019, a new health sciences building was opened at the Coffs Harbour campus funded from the Australian Government’s Community  Development Grants program. Moving further, the university is governed by a Council. The Council is responsible for the management of the University’s affairs. The major academic body providing advice to Council on academic matters is the Academic Board. The Council overall has 15 members

Also, the university has branch campuses  in  Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.
